It was pretty bare in the park. It was unnerving. It was such a beautiful day! Why would people decide to be somewhere besides the park enjoying a game of basketball or at least talking with their friends and enjoying the beauty of the park?! These thoughts ran through Jin's head as he made his way onto the court, carrying two large duffle bags, full of basket balls and a small stereo. A sigh escaped the young man as he set the bags down and started to empty the contents onto the court, setting the balls along the three-point arc on half of the court and setting the stereo on a nearby bench.
Jin stretched and let out a low grunt. The meister tied his dread locks back into a tight ponytail and started to adjust his clothing. He was wairing a white basketball jersey with navy blue trim on it. The name "J.J." and the number "68" was on the back of the jersey, also in navy blue. He was also wearing a pair of white and navy blue basketball shorts, that seemed to match his jersey. On his feet, he wore his favorite pair of basketball shoes: a white pair of melo m8's that seemed custom ordered so the white area was now navy blue. It was obvious that he wore this outfit for his old school during basketball games.
After tucking his jersey into his basketball shorts and securing the strings on his shoes, Jin walked over to the bench and pressed play on his stereo. He smiled as the music filled the air and made his way over to the arc with the basket balls placed on it. He picked up the first ball and hummed along with the music, taking a moment to get focused before starting. Once he entered the right state of mind he started his little drill. He bounced the ball twice before raising it and shooting it. After watching the ball soar into the hoop, Jin strafed along to the next ball, keeping his body facing the goal. He picked up the next ball and shot it again, moving faster as he continued the drill.
Once he reached the end of the arc, the meister would sprint to the different balls, no matter where they were on the court, and get back into his "comfort range" right inside of the arc, but outside of the paint and would rise for a jumpshot. He kept a mental tally of how many shots he made and how many he missed, ready to evaluate himself after his practice. He continued doing this for thirty more minutes before setting the balls down. He panted, catching his breath, as he stood next to his stereo with his hands on his hips.
Alright... five out of twenty threes and five out of twenty nine mid range.. I'm out of practice, The meister thought to himself as he looked towards the basket and slowly sat on the bench. A gentle, refreshing breeze graced the area, as if it knew that Jin needed it. The meister smiled and stood up again, picking one of the balls up again and started dribbling. "Time for phase two!"

A ball swishes into the net, thrown in a lazy arc from behind him. Bran had picked up one of the balls that had been left behind. He had seen the Meister practicing, and walked over in curiosity. He waited until Jin looked over, and then nodded his head slightly, his brown hair bouncing as he did.
"Hello there. Was walking out of town for a bit, but noticed you as I passed. Names Bran Tuithail. Demon Spear, EAT class. What's yours?"
Bran changed his right hand to a spear briefly, then extended his hand to shake after he shifted it back, brushing aside the long sleeve of his black jacket, and pushing his gray fedora back a bit so he could see the person in front of him better. His blue eyes looked at Jin curiously, analyzing him.
"New to Shibusen?" he asked, his Celtic accent making it a bit hard to understand the question. He seemed a bit unused to conversing, but genuinely interested in Jin. "You look like you haven't been here long. I haven't either, only a few weeks. But the bloody sun here would have tanned you a bit more by now." he chuckled slightly.

The brown-skinned boy watched as a ball swish through the net. He blinked, noting the type of arc that the ball had. He nodded his head in a bit of a surprise and turned his head to see where the ball came from. Jin looked the other boy over, still dribbling the ball. He had gotten so used to playing and handling the ball that he could do so effectively while letting his mind wander to other things.
As the meister repeated the name over and over in his head to connect the name with the face, he picked the ball up as the weapon transformed his arm. This caused an impressed whistle to come from Jin's lips. "Nice to meet ya, Bran. Jin Johnson, EAT class meister." Jin moved the ball from his right hand to his left and extended his right hand to grip Bran's hand firmly. He gave it a friendly shake and pulled his hand back, starting to toss the ball back and forth from his right hand to his left.
The weapon's accent amused Jin a bit. It didn't cause him to want to laugh or chuckle, but it was still amusing to an extent. The meister nodded his head and started to dribble the ball again. "Yeah I'm pretty new. I start my first class later today, actually. Just had to come and shoot around a bit." Jin looked up at the sun after Bran's comment and smiled up at the laughing sun. "Hey I don't know. The sun seems pretty... cheery. Some folks might need that extra tan."

Bran relaxed at the friendly response. He had been a bit nervous... Still was, but.. He'd worry about all that later. He focused again on the friendly meister in front of him. He nodded at the name. "Nice to meet you." He seemed reasonably nice. Either that, or his people skills were better than he thought. Unlikely, to say the least.
Bran glanced at the sun, and gave a small, rueful grin. He stuck his hands in his pocket, shoving a large boxy shape out of the way as he did so. "I suppose so. Myself included, probably, but I'm from northern Erin. Rains constantly. Not much of a tanning spot." He gestured to his pale skin. "I tend to burn quite easily. Hence the jacket and such."
The Spear leaned back on the hoop. He looked thoughtful, and then glanced questioningly up at the Meister. "If you're new, you're probably searching for a partner, right? As far as I know, from the school lists, there are currently 3 weapons and 3 Meisters looking for partners. Myself, and 2 others are the weapons. One of them's been trying quite a few meisters, but all of them don't know how to use a Ringblade. I think it's sort of like a bladed hula hoop. Also, she's apparently quite ... *cough* irritable. The other, I don't know. "

"Yeah I was gonna ask you about the coat... it's a bit warm out for that, don't you think?"
Jin watched the other boy and bounced the ball a little harder. He blinked for a second and nodded, shrugging the thought out of his head. When the weapon mentioned where he was from a couple of thoughts flashed his mind. He knew a woman named Erin. The thought made him chuckle a bit. The meister stared out in front of him, making slight shifts as he faked out a defender in his mind. "Erin huh? Where is that?"
He continued to dribble as he waited on the answer from Bran. He was trying his best to multitask and it seemed to be working for now. He performed a simple fake called an in-and-out. The meister telegraphed a move to his left and quickly shifted his direction back to his right. He took another step so his left food was in front and set it at an angle and pivoted on his heel, spinning and collecting the ball once his spin stopped. He motioned like he was going to shoot, but didn't release the ball.
It seemed like he wasn't paying attention to the weapon, but he took in each word he was saying. Three weapons and three meisters without partners huh? I wonder why they haven't jumped on the chance to pair up. These must be some pretty impressive weapons to decide to go without a meister... and I won't even think about the meisters.. Jin couldn't help but smile as he thought about it. He made it in his mind that these people must be highly skilled... he started to become anxious to meet them.
When Bran seemed to speak about a certain weapon, Jin put the ball to his side and looked over at him. His left eyebrow was arched a bit higher than his right for that moment. "A ringblade huh? At least she's being proactive to find a partner I guess. I haven't given much thought to a partner, to be honest. I guess I will after I go for my first class huh?"
The meister smiled and backed up a little. A weapon huh.. I may need one. He thought to himself a his smile turned into a grin as he got back a little behind the three line. He looked to Bran, seeing how he was leaning against the goal. "You might wanna move, Bran." After he said so, the meister took off into a light run, just a little more than a jog. Once he was a few feet away from the goal he pushed off of the ground, rising through the air until his hands were a few inches over the rim. He brought the ball down through the hoop and let the ball bounce off of his stomach before he let go of the rim and landed softly in front of the goal.
"I can't wait!"

Bran nodded at the query. "Yes, seems strange that they haven't matched up. But, well. One of the weapons is a jerk, apparently, as I said. One is somewhat unconventional. And me, well. I... don't make friends easily. When I.. When I discovered I was a weapon, it was an accident. And.. It didn't end well."
Bran takes off his hat and runs a hand through his hair. He seems very alone all of a sudden. He is silent for a minute. "Davis Mcgregor. Local brawling champ. 16 at the time. I got in a lot of fights. I tried to take him on. He was winning, and... That's when I discovered what I was." he slowly puts his hat back on, covering his eyes with the brim. A thin trickle of water works its way down one cheek. " He got to a hospital quickly. My hand was near his face as we were wrestling. It changed in the scuffle, and he rolled onto it. He's been in a brain damaged coma for the past 3 years. "
He looks sad, and one hand drifts to his pocket again. "That's why I came here. To learn how to control it. I've suceeded... As far as I know." Bran sits quietly for a minute, looking vulnerable, and a little scared, staring at his hand as if terrified. Then, he snaps his head up, and coughs awkwardly. "Sorry, got distracted. Was walking and thinking before I stopped. Sorry to burden you." he gives a hollow laugh. "Well, good luck." with that, he turns, and makes to continue out of town.

Jin collected his basketballs slowly. He was listening to the man's story and could was a bit disappointed with how quickly the air about the man changed. Why would someone be so carefree one moment and then be all mopey the next. It was a common occurrence in people around his age, but he still didn't understand it. At least not without him saying something offensive. Hm... I guess that's understandable... putting someone in a coma. He thought to himself as he looked at Bran out of the corner of his eye.
The meister put all of the basketballs, except one, into the bags he brought and packed his stereo into it securely. He watched the weapon's emotions run across him and chewed on the inside of his cheek. He felt bad for the boy, trying to understand how he was feeling. After a moment though, he didn't try anymore. He heard the story. The guy felt bad. Nothing he could do to ease that guilt.
The young athlete grinned as Bran stood up and quickly chased him down, moving in front of him to cut him off. "Whoa whoa. You're just gonna leave? You should at least play me in a quick game!" The meister started to dribble the ball, keeping a good distance between them.

As Bran walked away, he sighed, and slowly began to draw out the box in his pocket. He was so stupid. Once again, he had lost control of his mask. He had let it drop.... He was certain now. He needed to control himself better. Je felt sort of dazed, as his fingers traced the clasp.
"Whoa whoa. You're just gonna leave? You should at least play me in a quick game
Bran felt a Flash of unbidden anger. Damn it. There it was again. He was losing himself to this. He sighed, and looked back over his shoulder. He gave a smile. "Sorry, I'll pass for now. I got all depressed. Not much fun when I'm like this, and I don't want to bring you down. I'll go. I... I have something I need to do."
Bran smiled again, far enough away that his eyes, full of confusion amd uncertainty about what he was going to do unnoticeable. He turned, and pulled his hat down. He gave a wave over his shoulder, as he walked off into the bushes. He continued to walk, heading out of the town, and into the desert. Lying on the ground behind him is a single sheet of crumpled Paper. The words "Death Notice" Are just visible at the top, with a letter beneath. "We regret to inform you that as of 12:47 Friday evening, Travis Jacob Mcgregor sucumbed to his injuries, dying silently in the coma he has ....."
(Bran has left the Thread.)

Sitting down to spin tall tales about herself to impress a dewy-eyed NOT class initiate was a pleasant interlude, and a welcome one that allowed her to seek shelter from the blistering noon time heat. Detention or not, there was no reason to further punish herself by braving the sun for any longer than was necessary. Even so, she knew that not even she could manage to drag out the diversion for more than an hour or so. After divulging vital pointers for settling into the school as compensation for being made her source of entertainment, Eva sent the other girl off in the direction of her favorite gelato shop. Two scoops of the chilled, creamy treat were exactly what she craved right now. Two generous scoops crammed into a crunchy waffle cone. Mint chocolate chip please. It was torturous to imagine, but mint chocolate gelato was all she could think of, and frankly it was a much more appealing image to focus on than the endless scattered trash that she had been tasked with picking off the grass. After nearly two hours of meditating upon the variety of qualities that made mint chocolate gelato the perfect cold treat, the Chinese girl was wracked with such deep need for something, anything to revive her from the heat that she no longer cared to be picky about what form the refreshment took. Just water was fine; it didn’t even need to be below room temperature to satisfy her. With her bright orange trash bag dragging behind her, Eva slowly shuffled her way to the closest water fountain. She approached the fountain with great uncertainty, and grimaced slightly as she regarded the leaves and plastic wrappers that cluttered the basin. Was that dirt that formed the crust on the drain, and how did it even get there? She looked around before, though it was the only fountain within sight, thus the only one she was willing to walk to. The girl shut her eyes for a moment to consider whether quenching her thirst was worth putting up with the taste of dirt and soggy leaves. Avoiding dehydration and heat stroke won out over her distaste for musty tasting water, but when she pushed the round metal tab, there wasn’t even a trickle of water that emerged. Eva pressed down on the hot metal with more force, though even as she held it down there was nothing. The entire disappointing experience made her thoroughly despondent, and now she was too thirsty to simply put up with her parched throat for any longer. Having no luck finding it own her own, she now had to turn to the kindness of others- if they could be convinced to part with their own precious stores of water. The brave soul shooting hoops on the basketball court most certainly had to have at least one or two bottles of water to spare. “Hey, mind sharing some water with me?” she pleaded once she came upon the border where grass gave way to asphalt. The girl hid her trash claw behind her back; no need to give him any reason to reconsider her request. She pulled at the front of her thin dress a few times and wiped away the sweat on her forehead, anything to communicate that it was unbearably warm and his generosity would be greatly appreciated.

The weapon walked right past him. Jin couldn't do anything but keep dribbling the ball. He offered Bran a way to release some frustration, but he passed it up. Oh well. The meister shrugged as the weapon made his way out of the park. Without a second thought about the man he just met, Jin moved back within his comfortable shooting range. He picked up the ball from his dribble and held it above his waist. A deep inhalation to gather his thoughts and a slow exhalation to release any tension within his body. Finally, the meister raised the ball a little of his head and in one smooth motion sent it flying forward. With as much grace of ten pound dumbbell falling to the ground, the ball fell through the net of the basket.
The meister didn't have much time to critique himself however as he heard another voice coming from his side: "Hey, mind sharing some water with me?" Jin blinked for a moment as the ball bounced back towards him, slowing to a roll and stopping in front of his feet. The meister looked over to where he heard the voice to find its owner. He found what he was looking for pretty quickly. His eyes fell upon a woman that seemed to be wearing a weird kind of dress.
"Sure." The meister's answer came quickly, almost without thought. He walked over to the bench where his duffle bags were set on the bench. He shuffled through them slowly, trying to locate an unopened water bottle for the woman. His eyebrows ruffled a bit, the more he looked, a small bit of frustration growing. He stood up for a moment and put his hands on his hips thinking. I know I had some in here... The meister sighed and leaned back over. He checked the side pockets and the frustration faded. He pulled out two bottle of water, one with the seal unbroken.
Jin turned back around and walked towards the woman, handing her the bottle that wasn't opened. "Here you go! Its pretty warm out today, huh?" Jin flashed the woman a smile. The thought of someone coming out to the park without a bottle of water was a little odd to him, when it was as warm as it was. Of course, the park had fountains, but he would rather have his own bottle of water instead of having to find a fountain. But then, Jin mainly came to the park to play basketball, so having a bottle of water was pretty standard. Just meeting another person and enjoying the scenery didn't require the necessity of your own water at the spot. He quickly put the idea out of his head.
"My name's Jin by the way. You can call me J.J if you want. Kinda what I prefer." He chuckled at his reference to the initials "J.J" on the back of his jersey. The meister walked back over to the ball he left on the court and set his bottle of water next to it, replacing the bottle with the ball. He started to dribble the ball slowly and stared up at the basket, "So what were you doing out here, in the park?"

With wide eyes, she stared at the athlete who threw out a "yes" at her so freely. Was that it? He didn't mind in the least? Did the request even register before he answered? The girl anxiously watched him rifle through his bag, counting the milliseconds until he produced the promised bottle of water. She fidgeted in place as he continued to search, and angled her entire body to the left and right as she tried to get a closer look at what he was doing. There was something wrong with that bag. The only reason why seconds were slipping away and she still had not glimpsed aqua vitae had to be the interior of that bag was its own special dimensional plane where any source of water was banished from her presence. There was no other explanation for why exactly 130 seconds could elapse between the moment he said "Sure" until the very present and still there was no bottle in his hands, except when her count stopped at 146 seconds and she was so humbled by its glory that she all but fell to her knees when Jin finally found the elusive water bottle.
She took it from his hands graciously, handling it like it was a relic she had been entrusted with. Upon twisting the cap open, however, any semblance of polite manners was quickly abandoned. Without stopping to breath, she downed gulp upon gulp of the lukewarm water, crushing the bottom of the bottle even in her haste. Some of the liquid dribbled down her chin, though she had already sweat far too much that day to care about being unsightly. Jin, that was his name? As he introduced himself, Eva nodded her head even as she continued drinking. He was truly a saint, a blessed being too good for this cruel world. It turned out she did still retain a small amount of self-consciousness, as she felt relieved when he turned around to start dribbling the ball; he shouldn’t need to watch her uncouth, ravenous reaction to his act of generosity. After draining the entire bottle without so much as a hiccup, the girl wiped her chin with the back of her hand and tossed the bottle into the bright orange trash bag behind her.
She picked up the trash claw that she had let fall to the floor when she took the bottle from J.J. “J.J. I'm Eva. And you know, not doing much. Beautifying the park. With my presence, naturally,” Eva replied, quite aware that she looked utterly disheveled with half her hair sticking to her back and the upper half mussed and frazzled. "Why would anyone voluntarily be outside right now though? It's so disgustingly hot, it's already enough of a punishment just being outside right now. And you're exercising? How can you even enjoy yourself like this?"

A smile graced the meister's face as the girl responded. Beautifying the park huh? He thought to himself."Oh yeah? I'd say you're doing a pretty good job then!"
The sound of the ball hitting the pavement of the court sped up as the woman spoke. Jin never lowered his head to watch what he was doing, putting complete faith in himself. He bounced the ball between his legs over and over. He shrugged nonchalantly. "I think I've gotten a little used to it, honestly." The young meister caught the ball and held it against his hip with his right hand. He turned towards the woman and looked at her, noticing that the bottle was completely empty already.
"Well, you were pretty thirsty huh?" J.J let out a short chuckle before nodded his head. She was right though: It was incredibly hot out. J.J started to bounce the ball again, keeping it on his right side this time, thinking about how to answer her. "I just look ahead, to be honest. Even if this isn't enjoyable, what I'll be able to do later will be." The meister started to speed up the dribble a little. It was his way of somewhat showing what he meant. He kept his eyes on hers as he spread his legs a little and started to bounce the ball between his legs, his dribbles becoming a bit more flashy.
And all in an instant he stopped. The ball was clasped firmly between the palms of his hands and held in front of his stomach. He answered her question, so maybe she would answer his. He was tired of trying to figure it out in his head. "So... what's with that dress? It doesn't look like any dresses I've seen girls wear around here." Looking over her garment once again.

Even with the slew of complaints she had just let out, the girl still managed a sly smile. No matter what he thought of her response, or the barely concealed trash picking paraphrenalia she had in her posession, he had not chosen to pry any further beyond the excuse she had given him. At the moment she didn't know quite what to think of the gesture other than to appreciate his discretion.
"Used to it? I'm from the Bay Area- I mean I guess you could say somewhere around San Francisco since I don't think 'Bay Area' means anything outside of California- and I don't think I'm ever going to get used to this." She made a small grimace as slipped her free hand underneath her hair to wipe away the build up of perspiration. "Ugh, it's like I'm already sweating out all the water I just drank. It's supposed to be just those new NOT students that'll get this gross, this is embarrassing."
Eva seemed to be making a fuss only to herself, as the good Samaritan continued on dribbling. Was he- oh, now he was showing off! It was exhausting just watching him go out of his way to expend effort, and when he stopped to face her completely, she was about ready to take another break. It didn't even need to be on that bench from three hours earlier; she could hardly drag herself to the closest source of shade ten feet away. No, it was just water sports for her. Swimming suited her just fine, thank you very much. Any activity involving running, or really just physical effort performed on dry land, she could pass on with little regret.
Her eyebrows rose as he asked about the thin dress she was wearing. "I, well," she said, stalling as she looked from side to side. It was about time someone finally asked, and attention was exactly what she was looking to get in her decision to drastically change her wardrobe, yet she struggled to admit it was so. "This is called a hanfu," Eva stated with great hesitance, and lifted up the wide sleeves of the dress. "People in China dressed like this centuries ago, and-" The girl dragged out the last syllable as she struggled to find a solid explanation for a silly and superficial choice. "At the time, I figured Shibusen's just this bizarre new thing to my life, and things here aren't exactly as ordinary as the 'outside world', so why not just do something crazy that I wouldn't anywhere else while I have the chance to? So I came up with this." She took a hold of the long skirt and lifted it from side to side. "It's probably one of my most involved dumb-ideas, and I guess it just stuck with me to keep dressing like this."
Eva looked up at J.J. and gave him a sheepish smile and a shrug of the shoulders. "So yeah, I guess there's not really any non-superficial way to say it except that it kinda- pretty much is to get attention. You know. Normal girl acting out, except instead of getting tats and piercings everywhere it's this."

J.J.'s eyes were fixated on the dress as Eva explained it to him. A hanfu?... Hm. An old chinese dress. The meister recapped the information in his head before letting the right corner of his mouth raise slightly into a small grin. "A hanfu? Well it looks pretty comfortable for you. I would think you wouldn't be as hot in that as you would normal clothes." The meister knew all about doing things different. He was the only person who knew in his school with hair like he did... and he enjoyed it.
The meister took this time to really look the woman over. Picking up on a few characteristics that he glanced over the first time he scanned over the girl's appearance. He blinked a few times as he noticed the trash picker behind her back. Heh.. so she had a little bit of help beautifying the park. The thought quickly left his mind as he recalled her mentioning the NOT students. Was she a student of the academy? This definitely sparked the meister's curiosity again. He may have been new, but he would be able to remember a dress like the one she was wearing.
"So, Eva, are you a student at Shibusen?" J.J. gave the girl a friendly smile. She wasn't too bad to talk to. The past few people that he met all seemed to be so withdrawn into their own worlds. It was nice for him to meet someone who seemed to be willing to hold a conversation with a stranger. At least that way, they wouldn't really be strangers for long. Or so, that's how Jin saw it.

"Student and new EAT class member," Eva replied. Some of the swagger crept back into her voice as she boasted about her status, but she was quick to put it out. She'd already played the unfazed veteran once today and had her fun with it; a repeat performance was redundant, and J.J. definitely did not look to be the type to be so easily awed by mere idle talk. Even if he'd decided to pick holes in her tall tale instead of asking for a demonstration of her supposed battle prowess, she could not bring herself to try to make a fool of someone who had done her a favor she was so grateful for.
"Well, it's not really me. I just lucked out by choosing a meister who's pretty on point. He's the one who got me out of NOT a lot faster than I would have otherwise. I still haven't gone out on any missions yet though, it only happened recently. Can't say whether or not I'm more excited or scared for it," she said. "What about you though? Meister or weapon, which one are you? Were you someone who chose to come here for... because? Or did you not really have too much choice like me? Don't get me wrong, it's not like I don't like being in this school or anything, but I don't know yet if it's something I would've decided to do if I didn't have to."
The distinction was one she was still trying to work out. Meister or weapon? Free will, or merely the illusion of it? It was assuming that the differences in their circumstances influenced students' behaviors and attitudes in ways that could be picked up on by dedicated observers, but she was the type to be so inclined to find out whether or not it was so.
