[MISSION] Forest of Death {Damien and Alyssa} « Thread Started on Mar 21, 2012, 11:50pm »
Aside from a few cursory greetings upon picking up the students from the Tokyo International Airport, the pilot had been largely silent throughout the hour long ride. He had little information to offer in way of the mission and would rather prefer to make the situation as least complicated for himself as possible. As far as he knew, there was not much for him to worry about in the air, and hed like to keep it that way. The students were here to get their hands dirty, and as long as they completed their task, they could spare him the grisly details of exactly how they managed it.
Nows a good time to put your masks on. You wont be able to see the gas, but by the time you smell it theres nothing I can do for you, the pilot finally spoke. He raised his voice even louder than he ordinarily would out of concern over whether they could hear anything through the muffle of his own respirator combined with the roaring of the rotating blades. Wrap the battery around your waist and let the tube go over your shoulder. Theres a motorized fan to suck air into the filter attached to the battery, to give you an easier time breathing. If theres a leak anywhere, you wont have to worry about the gas coming in. Youve got about 3 to 3 1/2 hours of juice in there, so dont stay around long enough to find out what happens when the batteries die.
The small circular island of Miyake-Jima was edging into view. A transport ship could be spotted, docked in one of the ports at islands south-western end. It was immediately apparent that there was far more rock and forest than the few sparse clumpings of buildings that dotted the shore line. However thinly populated the island was, the pilot still grumbled to himself that if the locals hadnt been stubborn enough to move back after being relocated, they wouldnt have found themselves in the predicament anyways. Tokyo was good enough for the ones that stayed put; expensive living and crowded, but at least you weren't in imminent danger of lava flow, mud slides, poisonous gas, and apparently now Kishin Eggs run amok in the wild.
The mountain itself was not belching clouds of poison, though the same couldnt be said of the numerous smaller craters and vents that pockmarked its sides, seeping sulfur dioxide. As the aircraft passed overhead, even the pilot took a moment to peer down at the massive crater where the mountain top had collapsed in on itself. Good to know that he had that festering sore to keep him company while waiting around for the pair.
The helicopter touched down in a large grassy field by a cluttered collection of houses currently being evacuated. When you need me to get you, just shoot the flare gun. Dont forget to take the radio with you. Ill be circling the island and Ill let you know if theres anything to watch out for. Good luck!
Standing by the edge of the field was a member of the emergency personnel, waving at the newly arrived students.

Damien breathed slowly, enjoying his last few breaths of pure air for the next few hours. "You'd think that the locals would at least be tired o' wearin' these damn masks by now." Damien grumbled. He was looking forward to collecting his first soul, but he wasn't looking forward to trying such a feat while worried about his air supply. He looked up, opening his eyes and snapping out of his meditative state in order to glance at his partner for this mission. Damien had been given a minor brief on the petite girl. One year his junior, the Meister was his opposite in almost every way- and was entirely Weaponless. Damien wondered what the point of soul-hunting would be without a Weapon to upgrade into a Deathscythe. "Then again, a greeting gift of a couple souls wouldn't be rejected by any Weapon. Hell, I'd take it." Once more, Damien stole a glimpse of the woman he would be entrusting his life to. "Ya just better not get us killed, honey." Damien decided to build the first bridge."My name's Damien Lier. I'm a Demon Weapon, Axe-Type. Lookin' forward t' workin' with ya. What's yer name? Damien drawled in his honeyed baritone.
Then the pilot interrupted, speakingabout the lethal gas surrounding the island and how to properly use the masks. After listening to the instructions on how to wear the mask, Damien zoned out, considering the rest common sense and fluff. Damien breathed in once more, trying to calm himself down as much as possible. "If ya start flailin' around 'n' let yer tank get cut by the Kishin-Wannabe, you're gonna die. Of idiocy. Also, ya have a teammate who's countin' on ya not t' try 'n' lop her head off. So leave the berserker at home." Damien mentally chided himself. He cinched the battery pack around his waist, allowing the battery itself to comfortably rest in the small of his back. With a final sign, Damien then slid the mask to cover his face and flicked on the battery. Yuck. It definitely had that stale air taste. Damien finally shrugged on his favorite hoodie, using the fabric to pin his tube close to his body, freeing his movements.
Damien nodded thanks to the pilot and gave the man a thumbs up before jumping the three or four feet from the cockpit to the ground. Damien then stretched out his arms and caught Allysa as she too attempted the jump. He then gently lowered her to the ground, as easily as if he was moving a vase. "Just 'cause I'm about t' risk life 'n' limb t' eat a soul doesn't mean I can't be a gentleman in the meantime." Damien reasoned. Still, this courtesy was made significantly easier by Allysa's weight- or lack thereof. Decoding not to make a big deal of it all, Damien turned around to face the village, waiting for Alyssa to join him before moving on towards the evacuation personnel waving them down.
As he walked though the small village, Damien spun his head from side to side, trying to take all the sights in. Everywhere he looked, Damien saw strong willed and desperate people, all trying to eke put a living from this blighted soil. Even though he resented their reckless idiocy, Damien respected the indigenous people even more for their sheer tenacity. Everywhere Damien looked, he saw gas masks and- what was that? Damien's head snapped to the right, identifying what he saw earlier. There in the alley, just under the shadow cast from the houses, glistened traces of crimson blood. "That bastard Kishin-Egg's gone int' the village for his souls. He's bold enough t' attack a people like this in their homes... He's gonna pay." Damien kept walking towards the emergency personnel, wanting to get this over with. The pair finally reached the madcap waver. "G'evenin'. We're from Shibusen." Damien nodded to Allysa to show her Meister card for identification. "So what can ya tell us about the Kishin-Egg? Do ya know where its nest is?" Damien was slightly impatient to go after the Kishin-Egg. Time was not their friend here, and Damien did not want his first mission to be a failure.

The thin framed girl had arrived a little later at the airport since she had been assigned the mission after her soon to be mission partner had. He'd left earlier to go to Japan. Alyss had never been out of the school since she'd arrived there some months ago; she supposed it was about time that she went out, at least it distracted her from the things that had been stalling her mind for much of the time when she'd first arrived at the school. The pilot had greeted them upon arriving and she hadn't said much, just nodded politely and bowed. However, now they were in the helicopter and she had to open her ears a bit to hear the pilot over the muffled sound of his voice and the blades of the helicopter. Upon being prompted to put the mask on she picked it up and did as the pilot said; wrapping the battery around her waist with the tube over her shoulder. She nodded to him, understanding what he said adding an "Okay!"
She hadn't been introduced much to her partner for the mission besides what she had been told when she had been given the mission. He was completely her opposite, bulky and muscular while she was slim and petite. She wondered how someone as petite and small as herself could have ever been a Meister... But she shook the thought from her head as she remembered that she had a mission to do. And, she needed to take things seriously now. She looked towards him as he introduced himself, she'd been told his name. Damien. She'd been unable to answer him prior to the pilot announcing to them about the island and the masks. "I-I'm Alyssa!" she had to say over the noise of the helicopter as well as through the muffled mask.
As soon as she introduced himself they were near the ground and the man sitting across from her jumped out of the helicopter to the few feet to the ground. Alyss stood up, wobbling at first not used to the motion of the helicopter. She hadn't felt as nauseated as she was now, like ever. She was nervous about the mission and probably wasn't that good with flying, though the scenery from California to Japan was really..unbelievable. She never thought that she'd ya know, see the world and everything. She supposed this was her chance, causing a faint smile to appear on her face as she turned towards the pilot and gave him a smile before moving to the edge of the helicopter, gulped and jumped down. However, she didn't at all trust her balance.. However, the man, her partner for the mission Damien caught her in his large arms. It caused her cheeks to blush beneath the mask as he lowered her to the ground, "U-uhm, thanks," she said almost bashfully.
Damien turned towards the village and Alyss moved to stand besides him. She wore her usual black uniform, however beneath her skirt her legs were completely covered and she had a black overcoat with a hood. She followed a few steps behind Damien as he walked through the village. Alyss kept her hands close against the front of her form, feeling sort of like an outsider here. Yeah, maybe she was doubting herself some. This was her first real mission.. so yeah she would be maybe a bit scared. However they soon reached the emergency personnel and she felt a bit better, a little calmer and maybe a bit protected especially with Damien near her. She slipped into her pocket and pulled out her Meister card and showed it to the people. She would let Damien do most of the talking for now, he seemed to be a bit of her superior, more experienced perhaps.

The uniformed rescuer looked on wistfully as the helicopter took off, blasting wind from its spinning blades across the field. However, the appearance of the two students from Shibusen brought a small measure of comfort, and it showed in his frantic waving. Who wouldn't be happy that another party was finally here to deal with unpleasant business? He couldn't pass along the responsibilities quickly enough, given that there was little he could to stop the attacks. The pair presented a nearly perfect image of what an overworked and overwhelmed government worker wanted to see in this situation- until it was the slim, diminutive young girl who flashed her meister card. His expression, a mixture of confusion and dismay, was covered by the bulky respirator jutting out from his mask, though the worker stared at the identification card longer than he needed to. Though he dare not voice it, he felt more than just reserved or hesitant about the wisdom behind sending this particular pair. It seemed to be a viciously cruel joke, though as long as the villagers could assume that the burly boy, a literal pillar of strength, was to be the monster slayer and not the fragile girl he towered over, additional despair could be averted. The demon weapon even played the part of meister well, assuming the lead in immediately asking questions.
Good to see you too. My names Haruto, the rescue worker spoke, his English only slightly tinged with an accent. He nodded his head in the direction of the village, prompting them to begin walking. "The volcanic activity started up a week ago. No eruptions yet, but enough gases were released that we're evacuating all of the residents. By now it seems like Kishin Egg activity was already taking place prior to this, but on such a small scale spread across the island and out over time that it wasn't immediately apparent. With the confusion getting everyone out, it's started striking even in daylight. This was the last village it was spotted at, and it attacked before we could get here." As the trio walked by, Haruto gestured to the trail of smeared blood leading from the doorway of a house and continuing out into the alleyway. As you can see, the Kishin Egg almost always takes the bodies with him back into the forest. There are reports of one or two instances where people tried to set upon it with ordinary weapons but it doesnt seem too interested in killing more than it can bring back. Inexperienced and clumsy, they called it.
All around them, barely controlled chaos unfolded as emergency personnel knocked on doors and attempted to force a semblance of calm over the frightened inhabitants. There didn't seem to be much for any of the villagers to take with them, and from the spartan appearance of the one-story dwellings, the farmers and fishermen who lived within them wouldn't have too much to miss.
On the main road leading out of the village was parked a series of buses to transport the villagers. Lines of people were standing to enter each of them. A commotion was raised in one of the fully occupied buses, and wordless cries could be heard as a haggard looking woman in her late fourties was pulled from her seat and roughly shoved out. Several stuck their heads out of the bus windows, while those in line stood mesmerized as her tormentor, another middle aged woman, continued shoving her backwards and yelling. The woman only cast her eyes downward and clutched onto her pack of belongings, and no longer made a sound even when the meager pack was snatched from her hands and thrown aside. Others began shouting too, emboldened by this action. They pointed at the woman, unloading their anger upon her as more and more voices joined in. Amidst the rising wave of fury, the battered woman dared to open her mouth to deliver one anguished line, but she was interrupted by one final shove that sent her falling backwards onto the ground.

Damien raised an eyebrow at the emergency personnel. The man did a good job of hiding it with the mask and all, but Damien heard the dismay in his voice and saw the despair that pulled down at his shoulders. "Man, have things really gotten that bad around here? Damien pondered. He then mused on the blood he had seen in the alleyway and how the KE was taking victims in broad daylight. "Oh. They probably have.." Damien knew from personal experience how much stock people pit by strength and appearances. The Kishin Egg was killing civilians with impunity, and so seemed to be the biggest kid on the block. A weapon was invincible in his other form, but a strong Meister was required to swing the damn thing with any power. Few knew the first, but everyone knew the second. And from the looks of it, Alyssa didn't have much, and most would assume that Damien's only job was to kick back and be swung like a baseball bat. Damien shrugged. Perhaps Haruto didn't realize that Damien was currently a Solo Weapon, relying on his strength and Partial Transformation to claim the soul.
Damien clapped Haruto on the back, remembering too late to hold back his strength. Damien immediately clenched his left hand into a fist, clutching the fabric of Haruto's shirt to keep the man from flying forward. Damien grimaced. "Sorry 'bout that. I forget my own strength sometimes. I'll forget my own head next." Damien shook the aforementioned appendage before continuing. "Anyway, don't worry 'bout us. We'll take care o' the Kishin Egg one way or another. I don't care if I have t' strangle the damn thing t' death with my air tube, but I will keep my promise. I always do." Damien smiled, trying to uplift the mood. "Besides, we're the good guys. We can't lose!" Damien laughed, a deep, resonating sound.
As they walked, Damien was assailed by the sights and sounds of sheer chaos. Children and parents were forced from their homes for their safety, even though many didn't know why. A few children rushed Damien now and again, clutching at his pant legs as they asked for something from him in rapid-fire Japanese though the masks. An old fishmonger's wife appealed to his sense of kindness, begging for...something. All Damien could do was offer a shake of the head and a few mumbled words in English, and it was driving him insane. "Dammit! Why do I have t' stand here like I'm deaf 'n' dumb?" Damien wished he knew Japanese, if only to assure the villagers that the Shibusen students were there to ease their suffering. Damien looked back, catching Alyssa's eye in the process. "Hey, Alyssa, you hangin' in there?" Damien asked concernedly.
Haruto interrupted with some more information on the Kishin Egg, and Damien listened attentively. "So it takes the victim back with it t' the forest, eh? Can we just follow the blood, or is the ground too boggy t' keep a good trace? Has anyone ever tracked the thing, or guess its location? The forest is pretty damn big, Haruto." Just before them, perhaps ten feet away, a bus loaded up with refugees erupted into commotion. "Hey, calm down, y'guys." Damien called in English, looking to Haruto for help even as the trio closed in. A haggard woman was thrown bodily from the bus as they approached, and Damien unthinkingly leaped forward, using his powerful muscles to propel his mass towards his target. Stretching out his arms, Damien felt her weight just barely fall onto his hands. Like a fisherman reeling in his line, Damien curled his arms, bringing the woman close to his own body. He then bent his knees to absorb the shock, hoping to make this experience as pleasant as possible for the woman. Damien then saw the bus close in as his sheer momentum carried him forward. "Aww, this is gonna suck." Damien twisted so that his shoulder was the first part of him to slam into the bus, protecting both the woman and his air supply. The metal monstrosity rocked slightly as Damien showed it a whole new definition of Newton's Second Law. He opened his arms slowly, allowing the woman to escape. She was thankfully uninjured as she picked up her belongings.
With a sigh, Damien peeled himself from the bus, his high pain threshold allowing him to easily soak up the small discomfort from such an impact. Damien didn't bother looking to see if such an impact had caused a dent; he really didn't care. "Hey, calm down up there! Shut up!" The commotion continued, though a few stared at Damien. Damien shook his head angrily as he once again tried to get their attention. "Hey, stop!" This time, more people saw Damien, and a few other emergency personnel came to quiet the bus, but little could be done against the riot. "Screw this. I'll risk the Madness." Damien crossed his arms before his chest and quickly flicked them towards the ground. Twin axe blades appeared on his forearms as he did so, each one gleaming dully in the sunlight. "I said, EVERYONE STOP!" Damien roared, his voice tinged with the Madness. Though he spoke in English, a crazy man with blades growing from his arms like tree branches speaks an international language all his own. Damien once again flicked his arms down, dispelling the blades and his rage.
"Haruto, help me out here. Calm 'em down." He said, disgusted with the refugee's actions and what he had been pushed to. Damien then turned to Alyssa. "Look, this place is goin' t' the dogs, 'n' we need t' catch this Kishin Egg before he causes any more chaos. I've seen yer file 'n' heard 'bout ya before, 'n' you're far smarter than I am. Do ya think ya could track down the Kishin Egg somehow, or maybe figure out where it's gonna strike next? Use Soul Perception, or whatever Meisters call it. Ask Haruto if ya got any questions. Even if we were thrown together just fer this mission, we need t' work together if we want t' be o' any help t' these guys. I'm countin' on ya, Alyssa."

Alyss did and did not notice that the government worker had taken longer than what would be deemed necessary to look at her badge; perhaps it was hard to see beneath the mask, or he was just getting all the information about them that he needed. One couldn't be too careful, though this seemed like a dire situation. Alyss would have smiled, only the mask was covering her mouth however she smiled anyways as the man introduce himself. She listened intently as he gave them the information about the situation though they had already been briefed on it briefly. She followed alongside Damien as the government worker, Haruto, briefed them. Alyss was a bit caught off guard by the smeared blood on one of the doors of the house and froze for but a second before she followed behind the two. She hated to see that people had to be evacuated from their home. However, she felt sorry for them and could also relate. She had been sort of evacuated from her home, taken from a place she had known. She wanted to protect them, yet as the worker, Haruto had noticed or thought she was petite and didn't seem all that strong.
Alyss had witness her partner for the mission earlier when he had caught her in his arms safely and watched as he laid a hand on Haruto's shoulder but didn't seem to notice his own strength as he clapped by man on the back but soon caught the man before he could perhaps fly forward. Damien soon said that they would take care of the Kishin. Alyss was slowly doubting herself, maybe not consciously but a bit unconsciously. She had never fought a Kishin before, this was her first mission after all.
As they were a bit swarmed by people who were to be evacuated, speaking in a language neither of them knew all Alyss could do was try to smile while feeling sorry for the kids and people. However, she also felt a will to help them. They were helpless, like she had been helpless that one day when her parents had died.. S-she wouldn't let it happen ever again! She jumped as Damien called to her, "Y-yeah I'm fine" she said a bit hurriedly. She hadn't spoken much since they had arrived, not having much to say since Damien had done most of the talking. She was observing and taking things in.
However, soon after they came upon a group of people loading into a bus, commotion arising. Damien seemed to bolt forward to help. Alyss gasped as she watched Damien catch the woman who had been thrown from the bus and he had rushed in to help her. A sigh of relief could be heard beneath the mask as Damien safely caught her, however she seemed to watch in terror as Damien slammed against the bus. She was about to rush forward to see if he was okay, however he soon shouted for the people around the bus to calm down. Blades appeared from his hands to frighten the people and quiet them. She rushed near Damien about to ask if he was okay, however he soon spoke.
He was counting on her. She had learned Soul Perception at the academy but had never used it outside of the academy before. Mostly the souls that she had sensed were those that the academy, not Kishin Souls. However, as shy and doubting she was about herself she replied to Damien, "I-I can try to see where on the island the Kishin Egg is.." she said to him, thinking while she spoke. "Haruto, do you have a map of the island of some sort? P-perhaps we could pinpoint his location that way and find the best path there," even though her words seemed a bit confident she still stumbled on her words a bit, stuttering a little as she spoke.
"I am going to try and sense the Kishin's soul.." she stated as she closed her eyes and concentrated, trying to sense the Kishin Egg that is if it wasn't too far away.. She wanted to help the people of the best she could. They were counting on her and Damien. Perhaps her heightened emotions could help her sense and locate the Kishin Egg.

The impact of what he would be forgiven for mistaking to be a brick slamming into his back caught him by surprise mid-step, though the result likely would still have been the same even with his feet planted firmly on the ground. Haruto sputtered violently as he was launched forward by Damiens unchecked friendly gesture, only to be quickly yanked back into his clenched fist. He continued coughing through Damiens assurances and attempted to rub the spot in between his shoulder blades where a bruise would surely form. Though the rescue worker grasped the enlivening intention behind Damiens good-natured outburst, which perhaps even carried with it an attempt to impress upon him a measure of his strength as a form of reassurance, he maintained a moderately lukewarm level of enthusiasm.
Follow the blood trail? You could try for as far as it leads you; we simple havent had the time and spare manpower to try. Our priority is to get these people out right now. Not to mention were not equipped to handle something like that if we do encounter it. However much he was inclined to be skeptical about the pair of students, neither he nor any his colleagues were too eager to take on the task themselves. He had to speak up even more over the erratic flow of bodies large and small that was intent on fighting with him for the visitors attention. Their appearance seemed to renew, at least in part, the trust that someone knew how to handle that situation. It spoke of the severity of the rescue workers perceived failure when the residents began turning their appeals from the exhausted workers to two even more overwhelmed adolescents.
Piecing together reports from the past few years, it appears that even before all of this, it was already attacking individuals, though the incidents were spaced apart by weeks or even months. It has maintained a heavy preference for the very young or elderly. All mapped out, the incidents have occurred in different parts of the island, but always right along the edges of the forest. Its only since the evacuations began that its started attacking villages, basically a binge after several months of inactivity. You can probably figu-
The din at the boarding site escalated as the trio approached. What few personnel were already present attempted to shout down the crowd, but their voices were inevitably lost in the uproar. They held their arms out weakly, as though wanting to physically hold back the barrage of anger against the woman. Haruto took a few steps towards the pair of women, but hesitated to directly intervene. The full brunt of the mobs outrage would be turned against whoever dared to stop them from carrying out their vigilante justice; he would be tainted by association with her wrong doing and seen as even more deserving of retribution for it.
Damien, however, was far less cowed and threw himself between the pair. The metal shrieked as the boy collided against the side of the bus, and the vehicle shuddered as it settled back violently upon its axles. A moment passed as the stunned viewers soaked in his show of heroics, though they quickly regained their form. Before the instigator could abuse the woman any further, Haruto quickly grabbed her and pulled her aside. The other woman merely stood and watched, oozing contempt towards him.
His outburst of exasperated anger reverberated through the air, the words quickly disintegrating into one long primal roar. The accompanying threatening display was finally enough to intimidate the near-riot into silence. With it, a fresh wave of rescue workers scurried in to berate the mob back to form. The spell broke, and people returned to boarding the buses. Despite their begrudging compliance, a collectively despondent air settled among them. The instigator was roughly escorted back onto her assigned vehicle. Along the way, she jerked her arm loose of the workers tight grip and sneered as she ascended the steps of the bus.
Haruto handed off the harassed woman to a colleague for close supervision and looked back towards Damien, his attitude towards the boys competency completely changed. Thank you for intervening. Im very sorry that you had to do it. I have no idea what could have caused them to react like this, it hasnt happened at any of the other towns. Frightened, and sometimes angry with someone trying to pull them out of their homes, but never all directed at just one person like this. Nonetheless its something we should have been able to handle, he said, shaking his head.
He looked around for a flat surface, and settled for the top of a wooden crate. A map, yes, he answered as he withdrew the folded document from the inside of his vest.
This area in red is our current location, the site of the most recent attack. It occurred about three hours ago. The ones in green are those that began only after the spike in volcanic activity. It started towards the southern end of the island and moved up. We only arrive at the island at about the time it struck the area around Igaya. The attacks have generally been about a day or two apart, depending on how many people its taken with it. As Ive said before, it will try to take the whole body back with it if it can.
The areas in purple are probable past Kishin Egg attacks. The first attributed attack occurred sometime in 2006, then the next a year after that. He tilted his head, and brought his face closer to the map. They actually first started in this same area, and then migrated to the southern end for a period of three or four years. Haruto silently traced the path with his finger back and forth, back and forth.
"And it has to do with that woman," he said slowly, as though piecing together the information already jumbled up inside his mind. "The things people were yelling at her: 'You don't deserve to leave with us.' 'It's your fault the volcano is active again, you should stay behind.'
Alyssa, was it? See what you can do with your ability. I need to go find that woman and whatever information she has about all of this. Damien, please come with me. I feel that she will be more willing to speak if you are present."
As the petite girl fell into a deep state of almost trance-like concentration, she wouldn't have to probe far. The Kishin Egg's presence seemed to waver, though it carried with it strong undertones of fear and greed. Perhaps it wasn't so wise to so incautiously latch onto what she would find to be a yawning abyss of insatiable hunger. It clawed at her very consciousness, as eager to draw in willing prey as she was to come and root it out. If the meister was able to pull herself away, she would note that the very strongest pulses came from the forested area to the southwest of the town.

Damien snarled as the Madness brought out his more animalistic side. He could feel the fear floating through the air. He could smell the metallic tinge of blood from the Kishin Egg. "Just give in... You know how easy it is. How quickly you'll be able to solve the case, as long as you just... Give In." A voice whispered seductively in his head. Damien shook himself like a dog. If he gave in here, he could cause far more bloodshed then that damn KE ever could. He had to control himself, use his anger and direct it, not the other way around.
Collecting his thoughts, Damien turned to view the map, craning his neck in order to see over the other two. "2006? Why in the hell are we bein' called now? Coulda taken care of this without masks in the first place." Then Damien heard what Haruto had translated, and it took everything he had not to slice everything to pieces right there.
"The things people were yelling at her: 'You don't deserve to leave with us.' 'It's your fault the volcano is active again, you should stay behind.' "
Damien was visibly trembling with anger. "What kind of... Selfish bastards would dare to claim the right of life or death?" He clenched the side of the box, trying to calm himself down. The sounds of the rotten wood's protests could be plainly heard as Damien inexorably closed his grip. Once again Haruto spoke up, sparing the box its untimely fate.
"I need to go find that woman and whatever information she has about all of this. Damien, please come with me. I feel that she will be more willing to speak if you are present."
Damien nodded. "Got it. Be with ya in a sec, Chief." He turned back to Allyssa. "Be careful, alright? We have no clue what this thing can do, and I'd rather not complicate things just 'cause ya gotta face this thing down without a Weapon." Finished with his impromptu speech, Damien turned to follow Haruto to see the woman thrown from the bus. "Alright, Haruto, I'll trust you to translate. I was never any good with foreign languages in school. Get as much info about the Kishin Egg as possible. I would love a local's information about the area." As he said these words, thoughts slunk into his head, uninvited and unannounced. "Why would they blame this woman? How could she possibly do anything, unless she's... a... witch..." Damien didn't give too much credit to this theory, but he didn't feel like losing his head over some foolish mistake.

"She's here? We're coming in to talk to her."
"She refuses any visitors. She says all of the accusations against her have already been repeated out there."
"Tell her the boy who protected her is here to make sure she's being taken care of."
Haruto stood in front of the large tent that served as the rescue workers' temporary headquarters. The woman who had served as the go-between stuck her head out from behind the tent flaps once more time to pull them to the side and wave the pair in. Haruto jerked his head and firmly pressed his hand against Damien's back; the boy was the reason why she was going to speak, so it was best that he walk in first.
As soon as the two entered, the disheveled woman rose from her seat to approach them. Fully standing, she barely reached Damien's chest level. Heavily calloused fingers reached up but never quite touched his face. Seen up close and in the relative quiet and privacy of the tent, she appeared far more wizened than her forty-some years would lead one to expect. She smiled warmly at the demon weapon as Haruto offered up his excuse.
"He was concerned about you after what happened, and wanted to check that you weren't injured before setting off to find the Kishin Egg."
Her face froze for a moment, then her expression shifted into a crestfallen look. She withdrew to the old plastic chair she had previously been resting in and peered up at the two. She uttered a few phrases, seeming very tired.
"She thanks you for your kindness, but says that those people had an understandable motive for their actions, and that a warm-hearted person like you shouldn't be corrupted by an adult's mistakes." His eyes narrowed at her veiled confession, though he did not yet pounce to confirm his theory.
